Atrial fibrillation, or AFib, affects the upper chambers of the heart (the atria), and leads to an irregular heartbeat. People with AFib are at increased risk for stroke, as blood can pool in the left atrial appendage causing a clot. The clot may then move through the body and to the brain blocking blood flow and causing a stroke.
