Take Control of
Mitral Valve Disease

If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with mitral regurgitation, it means the heart’s mitral valve isn’t closing properly, allowing blood to leak backward instead of moving efficiently through the heart. Over time, this extra strain can lead to fatigue, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, and reduced ability to stay active — and, if left untreated, may contribute to heart failure.

Who Is At Risk?

Mitral regurgitation can affect anyone but is most common in older adults and people with certain heart conditions, including mitral valve prolapse, coronary artery disease, heart failure, or a previous heart attack. While some people experience few symptoms at first, the condition often worsens over time, making early evaluation and treatment important.

What Is MitraClip™ & How Does It Work?

For patients who are not good candidates for traditional open-heart surgery, MitraClip™ provides a minimally invasive alternative to repair the leaking mitral valve.

During the procedure, a small catheter is guided through a vein to the heart, where the MitraClip device is attached to the valve leaflets to help them close more completely. By reducing the amount of blood leaking backward, MitraClip can improve blood flow, relieve symptoms, and help patients get back to the activities they enjoy. Compared to traditional valve repair procedures, MitraClip:

Requires no open-heart surgery

Typically offers a shorter hospital stay and faster recovery

Can improve symptoms such as fatigue and shortness of breath

Helps many patients enjoy a better quality of life
